  10.        These release notes describe FDDIXPress release 6.5.
  11.        FDDIXPress is a network interface controller (board and
  12.        software) providing FDDI connectivity for Silicon Graphicsr
  13.        workstations and servers.
  14.  
  15.        Note:  Packaged with this software is a separate sheet that
  16.               contains the Software License Agreement.  This
  17.               software is provided to you solely under the terms
  18.               and conditions of the Software License Agreement.
  19.               Please take a few moments to review the Agreement.

  21.        For the O2, Origin, Onyx2, and OCTANE systems, FDDXPress
  22.        supports PCI FDDI boards in several configurations.  For the
  23.        IRIS Indigo, Indigo, and CHALLENGE M workstations and
  24.        servers, FDDIXPress has two configurations of the FDDI
  25.        board: FDDIXPI and FDDIXPID. Each of these boards interfaces
  26.        to the system through one GIO Bus connector.  The FDDIXPI
  27.        board allows one single-attachment FDDI connection to an
  28.        FDDI concentrator; the FDDIXPID board provides a dual-
  29.        attachment FDDI connection directly to the dual ring, or one
  30.        or two connections to FDDI concentrators.  An Indigo or
  31.        Indigo workstation can accommodate one of these boards. A
  32.        CHALLENGE M server can accommodate one or two FDDIXPress
  33.        boards.  An O2 can accommodate one FDDIXPress board.  An
  34.        OCTANE can accommodate up to three FDDIXpress boards.  An
  35.        Origin 200, Origin 2000 or Onyx2 can acommodate up to six
  36.        FDDIXpress boards.

  38.        When FDDIXPress is installed, the station can also use its
  39.        built-in Ethernet network interface, thus having several
  40.        network interfaces.

  42.        The SGI HIO bus FDDIXPress board comes in two
  43.        configurations, FDDIXPHI and FDDIXPHID.  The FDDIXPHI
  44.        provides one and the FDDIXPHID provides one or two dual-
  45.        attachment connections to the dual, or to one or two
  46.        concentrators for CHALLENGE L, CHALLENGE XL, or Onyx
  47.        workstations and supercomputers.  Note that the FDDIXPHID
  48.        board contains two, independent dual-attachment interfaces,
  49.        for a total of four ANSI standard FDDI MIC connectors.

  51.        The VMEbus FDDIXPress board provides one dual-attachment
  52.        connection to the dual ring, or one or two connections to a
  53.        concentrator for the following platforms:  CHALLENGE L,
  54.        CHALLENGE XL, and Onyx servers, workstations, and
  55.        supercomputers. The VMEbus FDDIXPress board interfaces to
  56.        these systems through one VMEbus bus connector.

  74.        The PCI FDDIXPress board can be purchased in single-attach,
  75.        dual-attach, or Copper-Distributed-Data-Interface (CDDI)
  76.        configurations.

  78.        CHALLENGE L, CHALLENGE XL, and Onyx workstations and servers
  79.        can accommodate multiple FDDIXPress boards; the exact number
  80.        depends on the workstation or server specifics.  FDDIXPress
  81.        for the VMEbus-option slot on all of the above-mentioned
  82.        platforms is designed for installation by authorized service
  83.        personnel only.

  108.        FDDIXPress software runs on any SGI system.  However, the
  109.        appropriate FDDI controller board must be installed and
  110.        connected to the FDDI ring.

  112.        1.3  _O_n_l_i_n_e__R_e_l_e_a_s_e__N_o_t_e_s

  114.        After you install the online documentation for a product
  115.        (the _r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s subsystem), you can view the release notes on
  116.        your screen.

  118.        If you have a graphics system, select ``Release Notes'' from
  119.        the Tools submenu of the ToolChest. This displays the
  120.        _g_r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s(1) graphical browser for the online release notes.
  121.        Refer to the _g_r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s(1) man page for information on
  122.        options to this command.

  124.        If you have a nongraphics system, you can use the _r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s

  145.        1.4  _P_r_o_d_u_c_t__R_e_l_e_a_s_e__L_i_m_i_t_a_t_i_o_n_s

  147.        This release of FDDIXPress does not support loading the
  148.        miniroot over the FDDI ring; Silicon Graphics computers
  149.        cannot be booted over the FDDI ring.  This limitation does
  150.        not affect loading the miniroot over an Ethernet network.  A
  151.        system can boot (load the miniroot) over its Ethernet
  152.        network, and, thereafter, function with both Ethernet and
  153.        FDDI network connections.

  156.               booting over the network.  See Section 2.4,
  157.               ``Configuring a Diskless Station.''
